FLIGHT
It’s Fly-in Time!
ONE OF THE BEST THINGS about summer is the abundance of fly-in events that happen across the country. Warbirds over Delaware is
one of the oldest—and certainly one of the most popular!—military RC model shows in
the country, and senior tech editor
Gerry Yarrish not only enjoyed the
camaraderie and warbird action, but
also came back with a jackpot of pho-
tos and videos. Of course, only a few
could fit into this month’s article,
but you can check out the exclusive
online images at modelairplane
news.com/WOD09. And don’t miss
Gerry’s close-up videos of some out-
standing aircraft as well as interviews
with pilots on the flightline. Speaking
of events, as we go to press we’re
preparing to cover the largest helicopter event in the country, the
IRCHA Jamboree, at the AMA
national flying field in Muncie, IN.
Our full coverage will be in next month’s issue, but you can go online now and see pho-
tos and videos of the latest helicopters and gear as well as some amazing scale machines.

Question of the month: Wood or composite propellers?
John Reid:
Between plastic or
resin composite or
wood, I would go
with wood
because of less
flexing.
John Glezellis:
Excessive “prop
flex” of some
wood props may
decrease performance, so I use
Mejlik hollow carbon-fiber props for
competition; they
are light, yet very
strong.
Jason Benson: For
IMAC-style flying, I
prefer the quieter,
more efficient, carbon-fiber props.
For 3D, I prefer the
quicker response
of the lighter wood
props.
Klaus Ronge:
Composite for my
sport planes
because of their
durability, but my
favorite is the
Mejlik carbon fiber
for scale aerobats.
Gerry Yarrish:
Wood is the only
way to go. If the
prop hits the
ground, it acts as
a weak point to
minimize engine
damage.
