What’s under the hood and
what’s its performance like?
;e Eagle 580 is powered by
a Lycoming IO-580 engine,
330hp air-cooled engine, and it
is coupled to a Hartzell 3-blade
composite propeller. ;e aircraft
is really a thrill to fly. It has a 400
degrees/second roll rate, and the
airframe is designed to take 10Gs
both positive and negative.
Matt, your airshow
performance was amazing.
What’s your impression of the
Performing here at the U. S.
Air Meet is just great. Friday
I performed for about 1,000
school kids, and it was a great
experience talking with them
and explaining the performance. I
also think it is a great experience
interacting and chatting with all
the great RC pilots here at the
show. ;e RC aviation group
always asks the best, most
informed questions, and I always
come away inspired by the
aircraft they fly and their piloting
Matt Chapman, with his full-size Eagle 580, wowed the
crowd with his high energy aerobatic routine.
Tell us a little about your Eagle
My aircraft is based on the well-
known Mudry CAP design of
which there are only five CAP
580s flying in the world today. On
the technical side, it weighs 1,300
pounds, has a 24-foot wingspan,
and a top speed of 240mph.
We’ve bumped into you at
several RC events. Tell us what’s
in your RC hangar.
As you know, we bumped into
each other earlier this year at the
Warbirds Over Delaware event.
I was flying one of my favorite
RC planes, the Beechcraft C- 45
twin. It is 1/5-scale and powered
by a pair of Zenoah G-38s. It was
built from Ziroli plans. It features
Robart retractable landing gear
and I have also just installed
working nose landing lights and
retractable lights under each
wing. ;e plane was originally
built by my friend Lenny H.
Another warbird I have flown
successfully is my Bucker Bu-131
biplane. Scratch-built from Gary
Allen plans, it has functional
shock-absorbing gear custom
built for me by Sierra Precision
RC, and it is powered by a Desert
Aircraft DA- 85. ;e plane has
a 108-inch span and weighs 31
pounds. I also have a 1/3-scale
Super Cub built from a Balsa USA
kit and powered by a Zenoah
G- 62, and a turbine-powered Sky
Master Viper Jet. It has an auto-
start function that allows engine
starts with no external support
equipment. It features retractable
landing gear, working flaps, and a
full set of custom lights by Details
4 Scale. ;e Viper Jet has a top
speed of 180mph.
