Miss Chevrolet Plans
U I love your magazine, and I especially enjoy your
construction articles for RC scale airplanes. There
aren’t many magazines left that still offer quality
drawings for us builders. I loved Henry Haffke’s article about his giant-scale Howard Ike, Miss Chevrolet
racer. I had built his .40-size Ike many years ago, and
I was very impressed with the 1/3-scale version in
your March 2013 issue. However, I think that you
have a misprint somewhere, either in the magazine (price is $24.95) or on AirAgeStore.com (price
$29.95). Please let me know what the real price is. I
just happen to have a Zenoah G- 26 on the shelf and
this would be a great airplane to hang the engine on.

The full-scale Super Decathlon has been in production
since the 1970s. Over the years, it has become well-
known as a great aerobatic trainer and a good choice for
a personal aircraft. There have been many models of this
plane over the years, but I would venture to say that the
new 100cc plane designed by Mike McConville has to be
one of the nicest I’ve seen to date.
The first thing that you will notice when you receive
your new plane is the size — it’s huge! Inside the box is
a very well-packaged, complete ARF model. All pieces
had their own divider or box and were well protected. The
entire plane is constructed of balsa/ply built-up structure
with fiberglass and Lexan pieces. The 100cc Decathlon is
covered in UltraCote, and all fiberglass parts come painted
in perfectly matched colors.

Hi, Walter—thanks for writing. The giant Howard
Ike was an interesting project, and I had a lot of
fun working so closely with Henry during its construction. Actually, the $29.95 price on AirAgeStore.
com is correct, but this is because when the magazine was printed, the plan set had only three sheets,
so the price in the article was correct at the time.
Since it was published, we added an additional page
with a second wing panel, so the Howard Ike set
now has four sheets of plans and you don’t have to
flip over and reuse the original wing sheet. There
are now a left and a right wing panel offered with
the set. Good luck with your build, I am sure you
will enjoy building it and flying it when you have it

U When I was a kid, my uncle owned a Super
Decathlon and it was painted in exactly the same
scheme as the model on the cover of your July 2013
issue. I have many memories of flying with my
uncle and the thrills of flying through a loop. After I
got back home from the military, I started flying RC
and have always had a soft spot for Super Decathlons. The giant one from Hangar 9 is definitely on
my short list. I noticed that your reviewer used a DA
120 engine. I have a DA 100 engine and was wondering what you think about its ability to fly this big
of an airplane. Thanks again for a great magazine
and for rekindling my Super Decathlon memories.

Thanks for writing, Frank. You know there is an old
saying that says in terms of aerobatics, there’s no substitution for cubic inches. With that said, I’m sure
that the new Hangar 9 giant Super Decathlon will
fly just fine on a 100cc engine. Checking out the
specifications box in the “Flight Test,” the wing loading for this 40-plus-pound airplane is only slightly
over 20oz./sq. ft. Contributor Jason Benson gave the
plane great scores and given its relatively light wing
loading, you just know it’s going to be very pilot
friendly. Thanks for sharing your airplane memories
