Stan Kopreski did a great build on this Sikorsky H- 34 in Coast Guard colors. The
H- 34 has 12S power and weighs about 38 pounds. The molded fiberglass fuselage
was supplied by scale contest director Darrell Sprayberry at Unique Aircraft.
Vario models tend toward large-size and dedicated mechanics, but this very sharp
Lama is based on standard T-Rex 700 mechanics. The result is a convenient-size
model that looks outstanding in the air.
Scale helicopters are particular favorites of mine, and the
competition featured some amazing models and impressive
pilots. This year’s IRCHA scale champion was Marcel Germann
of Switzerland. Marcel is an outstanding modeler and
gifted photographer, and his 500-size Sea King proves that
impressive scale models don’t have to be huge or expensive.
Second place went to 17-year-old Robin Adamschak of
Germany, last year’s champion, and third was Marcel’s friend
Roland Kaufmann, who won the event in 2013.
Marcel Germann took first
place in the scale competition
with his amazing Sikorsky
SH- 3 Sea King. The model
started with T-Rex mechanics
and a basic SmartModel
body, with Marcel adding
scale rotors and loads of
scale details. Marcel is a
superfriendly guy, and his win
was well deserved.
Steve Smith is a relative newcomer to scale helis, but his AH-1W “Whiskey
Cobra” is an outstanding model. Steve flew like a veteran to finish fourth
place in the scale competition.
Roland Kaufmann was
another of the Swiss
contingent, and he flew his
highly detailed Alouette III to
perfection. Roland built this
model from scratch more
than 25 years ago, and it flies
today with the original Heim
mechanics, now converted
to 10S LiPo power.
